Series of Jewish Studies Lectures for Public

Students of Jewish Studies and other study programmes of the UP, as well as the general public are invited to all lectures and events.
Unless otherwise stated, the lectures are always held at 5 p.m. in the library of the Kurt and Ursula Schubert Centre for Judaic Studies, UPOL Faculty of Arts, Tř. Svobody 26, 1st floor, classroom no. 2.36.

Series of Jewish Studies Lectures for Public WS 2026/27

• 7 October MARCELA SULAK: IN MOURNING AND REMEMBRANCE

To mark the third anniversary of 7 October, Marcela Sulak will present contemporary poetry by Jewish, Muslim, and Christian authors who use elegy to seek, in a shared past, a space for mourning, consolation, and hope. Lecture in English.

• 12 October LENKA ULIČNÁ: DAJČMERIŠ – MORAVIAN JEWISH GERMAN

What languages did Jews in Moravia speak? In her lecture, Hebraist Lenka Uličná will present Moravia through discoveries from genizot and other objects held in the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague, revealing it as a space where Hebrew, Yiddish, German, and Czech shaped a diverse Jewish linguistic landscape. Please note that this lecture will exceptionally take place on a Monday as part of the Days of Jewish Culture Olomouc 2026 festival.

• 14 October – INGEBORG FIALOVÁ: BRNO’S GERMAN (NOT ONLY JEWISH) LITERATURE – A FORGOTTEN PHENOMENON

Prague German literature is a well-known concept, while German-language literature from Brno has largely remained overlooked. The lecture will introduce several remarkable Brno authors, both Jewish and non-Jewish, and their works, which will soon be published in the first anthology of Brno German literature.

• 21 October MAGDALENA SEDLICKÁ AND ANETA PLZÁKOVÁ: THE HOLOCAUST IN SPACE AND DATA – MEMOMAP AND THE EHRI-CZ PORTAL

The lecture will introduce EHRI and its tools for researchers and the general public, including the Memomap application, which tells the stories of Jewish residents during the Protectorate, and the emerging EHRI-CZ Portal, which connects information on Holocaust victims, transports, sites of persecution, and archival sources.

• 4 November ZBYNĚK TARANT: ANTISEMITISM IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC – STATISTICS AND TRENDS

The Czech Republic is a safe country for the Jewish community, yet antisemitism has been intensifying as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. This lecture will explore its current forms through statistics and field research.

Series of Jewish Studies Lectures for Public - Winter Semester 2024/25

The lectures are given by specialists from the Philosophical faculty and by guests from other universities. 
Lectures are usually held on Wednesdays at 5:00 pm in the Library of the Center for Judaic Studies at Třída Svoboda 26 (1st floor). In WS 2024/25 the lectures are concentrated in the month of October. The program is subject to change, so keep an eye on the CJS website.
