Public Events

The Kurt and Ursula Schubert Center for Jewish Studies has long been organizing cultural and educational activities that introduce Jewish history, culture, and contemporary life to the general public. In its outreach activities, the Center collaborates with a range of non-academic institutions. Key strategic partners include the Museum of Art Olomouc, the Jewish Community of Olomouc, the Jewish Museum in Prague, and numerous other museums and educational organizations.

Public Events and Projects:

Days of Jewish Culture Olomouc

A multi-genre festival organized since 2009 by the Center for Jewish Studies in cooperation with the Museum of Art Olomouc and the Jewish Community of Olomouc. Through lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, theatre and music performances, and public discussions, the festival presents the rich Jewish cultural heritage of Moravia while also showcasing contemporary Israeli culture. The program combines scholarly reflection with public outreach and includes educational activities for schools aimed at promoting understanding, dialogue, and the prevention of antisemitism, racism, and xenophobia.

Series of Jewish Lectures for the Public

A regular lecture series featuring domestic and international experts, covering Jewish history, religion, literature, culture, and Israeli studies.

Hebrew Podcast KAL!

A podcast produced as part of the project “On the didactics of small languages: Hebrew at the Faculty of Arts UP in Olomouc”. Available on Spotify.

Traces of Memory: The Fate of Books of Jewish Owners from Moravia during the Shoah

A student research project focused on books confiscated from their Jewish owners during the Nazi persecution. By studying ownership marks, dedications, and other traces in these books, the project uncovers the stories of their original owners and contributes to understanding the fate of Jewish communities in Moravia during the Holocaust.

Map of Jewish Settlement in Olomouc

A specialized scholarly map visualizing the historical development of the Jewish community in Olomouc and its surroundings from the first evidence of Jewish presence to the present. The project includes a main map showing settlement patterns and supplementary maps illustrating interurban migration, the origin of immigrants from Central Europe, statistical data on the Jewish population, and analyses of the community’s socio-economic structure and cultural-linguistic composition. The map was created by the Center for Jewish Studies in collaboration with the Museum of Art Olomouc and experts from the Department of Geoinformatics.

Jewish Olomouc - Map and Mobile Application

An interactive map project introducing the intellectual and cultural history of Olomouc’s Jewish community to the general public. The map features 22 chronologically arranged sites connected to the city’s Jewish history. Each site includes text and audio explanations, enriched with visual documentation, including video tours of spaces normally inaccessible to the public. The map can be used as an interactive guide or as a geocaching-style game. The project is available in the Actionbound app in Czech, English, and German, free to download for Android and iOS devices.

A public outreach event at Palacký University in which the Center regularly participates with programs focused on Jewish studies.
